Tilikum

By now everyone has heard of the death of the trainer at Sea World by the killer whale Tilikum. While this is tragic and sad, I've been thinking about both sides of the situation for a few days. When I was a kid I experienced "Shamu" at Sea World which was a lot of fun... getting soaking wet, etc. Now, after this has happened and watching videos, I wonder if they should have these giant wild animals in captivity at all. I'm am by no means a member of PETA, a tree-hugger, or anything like that, but you have to take into consideration the track record of this animal. If they are born in captivity thats one thing - it's like a pet horse or dog - it's natural for them and they obviously dont' know anything else. They couldn't survive in the wild anyway. But Tilikum was born in the wild. That presents a problem.

Here's one perspective I've been thinking about. Tilikum is a wild animal. They captured him in the wild (which is now illegal - all of the other orcas are born in captivity) which probably attritubutes to his violent past and current behavior. Three inviduals have been killed by Tilikum. But can you blame a killer whale for being an animal and doing what is natural? He's obviously not happy with his current living situation. They aren't named "killer whales" for no reason. If they thought Tilikum would be "happier" being kept in captivity, in a tank comparively the size of a bath tub to his natural enviornment, and being forced to put on silly shows and interact with humans for hours on end... they were mistaken.
Sea World already had safety measures in place for him such as trainers not allowing to be in the water with him, and he was only used primarily for the splash portion of the show. But obviously that wasn't enough.

Tilikum is 22.5 ft long and weighs 12,300 lbs - making him the largest living captive orca.

Here is my other thought process on this stiatuation. Tilikum is an animal. Animals never come before humans, in any circmstance. Something should have been done with him the FIRST time he killed someone. I'm not saying put him down or anything, but he should have NEVER been used around humans again. A human life is far more valuable than the life of this animal. It may have been a "freak" accident and some say Tilikum may not know his own strength and was just "playing", but the fact of the matter stands - he killed three people. What other animal do you know would still be alive if it had killed three people, or ONE for that matter? They put dogs down instantly when someone is seriously hurt or killed by them. I find it unbelieveable that Sea World is still going to continue using Tilikum for shows!!

That is my rant for today! I'm tired of hearing about it on the news everrrryyy night, but it will be interesting to see where this goes. Three strikes and you're out in my opinion. Like I said, I see both sides, and if the decision were up to me I know it would be a lose-lose situation.

My prayers are with the trainer Dawn Brancheau and her family. The only consolation, small as it may be, is that she died doing what she loved. I hope we can all say the same thing when our time comes!

The day before Friday

So today I got out of a super *yuck* Gynecologist appointment because I didn't know I was 3 months early for my annual, AND I forgot to get authorization from Tricare. Oh well! I'm not too upset about that! Haha. Instead I killed my lunch hour time and went to Wal-Mart for some groceries for our taco party this weekend. I don't know if it's really a "taco party", but we're having people over and I'm making tacos... so, I guess it can be called whatever I want, huh? I also got my car washed for $7 at this drive-through place. My car has been so dirty latley! I just had it washed last weekend too. There is some pollen or something in the air and it's super visible on my car because of the color. It's new to me still, so I like to keep it shiny. :)

I really need to get back on the workout bandwagon. I was doing so well last week, but because of all the nights sleeping on the couch this week I've been tired and grouchy. I got some great sleep last night, so I'm either going to run tonight or in the morning fo sho.

Last night I made a little surprise for Eric and had candles lit and some drinks ready for him when he got home. I just wanted a night of relaxing - nothing else - and just us. We didn't turn the TV on or do much else but talk, have some wine, dinner, and footrubs. After that I slept *super* good so I feel much better today!

Oh oh! Look at the CUTE mini-me that the super awesome Kelly made for me!

I have her posted on my sidebar too, and I'm loving it! :) It's just for fun but I think it's super cute!

Happy day-before-Friday everyone! I'm excited about this weekend. Tomorrow I'll probably have lunch with Eric, and tomorrow night we're having dinner at Smokey Bones with friends and going to see a movie. I wanted to see Shutter Island but they've seen it already, so we're going to see The Crazies I think. I'm pretty sure I might die, so I might sneak some vodka in with me to pour in my diet coke.... haha.

Our first "real" wedding anniversary

I was tagged by Kelly to play this photo game. Here's how it works:

1. Open your 1st Photo folder.
2. Scroll to the 10th photo.
3. Post the photo and the story behind it.
4. Tag 5 or more people.

Our First "Real" Anniversary

The date we celebrate as our anniversary is June 4, 2008. That's the day we went to the courthouse and got legally married! Eric was deployed three months later, and while he was gone I planned our "wedding ceremony" which was on May 3, 2009.

Anyway, this picture is from our first anniversary, June 4, 2009. Obviously it was only one month after our big "wedding ceremony" so we didn't want to do anything major (and had no money! lol). Eric and I decided to switch off every year, taking turns planning the anniversary. I took year one, he'll have year two, etc. For our first year, I secretly reserved a hotel room on the beach for us. I bought some sexy lingere, wine, rose petals, and candles and got off work early to go check in and set everything up.

The best part was I made a scavanger hunt for Eric to do once he got off of work, because he didn't know where I was at. I left the first clue in the mailbox (he always checks the mail), the others in our house, and the last one in our apartment office. I printed them all on one piece of paper then cut them into squares. On the back I had the address of where I was at! :) It was so fun to plan, and kind of nerve-wracking... I'm a control freak so not knowing if he would find them in order or on time was hard. But it all worked out and we had a GREAT time! I had the room all set up when he got there. We went out to dinner at a mexican restaurant and came back for some drinks and a movie. It was rainy that night, but the next day was really nice so we laid out on the beach for a few hours before heading home. Good times and great memories! :)

 Now to tag five others:

1. Callie Martinez
2. Sierra at Ocean Dreams
3. Mari Larkin (aka my mom)
4. Jen at Booty and Brains
5. Sarah at indianapoluxe.

Have fun! :)

Monday. Need I say more?

Oh, Monday's. Gotta hate love them.

So I get in at 8:15 this morning and see an email from the CEO that she needs this letter of support for an organization by 10:00. I email the girl who needs to do it. She's out until tomorrow. So I email the COO who could also do it; he's leaving at 9:30. By now it's almost 9:00, so I email the CEO back and she said to ask the original girls' supervisor to write it. Of course she's in the COO's office so they're BOTH tied up. Eventually, I tracked her down in a different suite, she wrote the letter, my supervisor edited it, and by 10:30 I had it emailed to the organization. Whew.

There's also an email from the CEO asking questions about her trip to Tallahassee this Wednesday. Where is the meeting located? (The Supreme Court. Don't ask me which room....) Can you get me a map from the hotel to the meeting location? (Already did that. In the packet I gave you last Thursday.) Are there any materials to review? (Um, I have no idea? Ok, ok I'll find out...) Also, I had previously reserved her two different hotel rooms waiting for her decision on one. She decided, so I cancel one and keep the other. Last week she decided she wanted to take a rental car. I research which location is closest to her house, will they pick her up, which is cheapest, will it be cheaper to return Friday night or Saturday morning... you get the picture.

If I've learned one thing, it's that CEO's like options. I've learned to think of the questions she's going to ask and have them answered before she can ask.

Today, she canceled the trip to Tally.

Oh, my poor, abused brain. Hey at least this time there wasn't a flight involved! (Yes, that's happened before. Oh and a side-note about planes for my CEO: never reserve a flight that uses a "puddle jumper"...even if you don't think it's a puddle jumper because it holds 200 people. That's still a puddle jumper.)

Oh yeah, and I got payroll done today (the HR side of what I do) so everyone will get paid this Friday.

Yay for Monday's!

I'm going home to run it out tonight.

Weekend recap

Our plans changed this weekend when Eric started feeling pretty sick on Friday. We had plans to go bowling with friends Friday night, but ended up staying home because he had a fever and sore throat. Poor guy. :( I cleaned up the house, did laundry, and make sugar cookies! (I got the recipe from Kelly!! Thanks girl!)

It was soooo relaxing. Eric went to bed super early so I lit a candle, played some Norah Jones, and started baking!

Gotta have something relaxing to drink too! :)

I made circles and hearts (I looked for more cookie cutters but didn't find anything good)

The cream cheese was DEFINITELY the better of the two!

So yummy!

I brought a bag with me this weekend and they were a hit. It was fun to do something that I don't do very often and just relax. :) Thanks again for the inspiration Kelly!

Saturday we slept in a little bit (well more Eric than me). I went for a run, got my car washed/cleaned, then headed out to Tampa by myself and sickly Eric stayed home.Once I got there I dropped Amira off at my sisters house and headed out to Sams to buy food for dinner. So about Sams Club. I used my sisters membership card because obviously I don't have or need one. My mom used to do all of her shopping there when we were kids, so I'm very familiar with it, and there was nothing crazy about it back then. But NOW when I go, I can't IMAGINE buying food that HUGE! lol The pack of chicken I bought was 16 lbs!! I was going to buy some baked beans but they only sold the GIANT can! I bought a bag of corn and it was like 10 lbs! Hahah. Wow. I'm sure you save money, but only if you can actually USE all that food! Ok, moving on...

We had a good time at dinner. The guys grilled the chicken with BBQ sauce, I made corn and had chips and dip. I got Nik two platters of sushi which is all she ate. I got a bottle of wine then realized no one had a bottle opener... so my brother came to the rescue! :)

Note the ghettofabulous way to open a bottle of wine! LOL

But hey, it worked, and you do what you need to. *wink*

Most of the night we just relaxed, watched the boys play, and talked.

Pretty much all JJ and Brandon are into are trucks, trucks and more trucks. (Brandon has a little bit more versatility, but still).

This is JJ mesmerized by watching monster trucks on You Tube:

He cried so hard when it was time to get off and go to bed!

I got home around lunch time today and Eric is feeling a little bit better - no fever but still has a sore throat. I'm hoping it's not strep because I think that's pretty contagious! I'm crossing my fingers that I don't get sick too!

Tonight Eric and I cuddled in bed with his laptop to look at excursions for our cruise (we're going to swim with dolphins and snuba!), then watched Saw 6. EEK!

I hope everyone else had a good, relaxing weekend!

Killer puppy

One of my co-workers just emailed this video to me and said I should teach my dog how to do this. Too funny! Amira would freak out when the balloon popped!

Photobucket

It's ours!

Yesterday I posted about getting an unexpected $500 from the IRS in our tax money. Well Eric called last night and got an automated message saying when they reviewed our tax return they found something or other... and it's correct! We got $500 more than we were planning! :) THAT was exciting news! Haha. We're splitting it up between paying off my new purse, credit card, cruise, and some cruise excursions. Feels so good to be able to do all of that!

Since we're leaving for Tampa tomorrow, some friends want to hang out tonight, which will be grrrreat. Us girls are getting together for lunch today to "scheme" about what we can do tonight. :) After all, it is Melbourne and there's not a lot of options. Ha!

Last night I talked to my sister about the dinner plans for Saturday. After we hung up, she called right back and said "JJ wants to talk to you" and put him on the phone. He can't really 'talk' but all I heard him saying over and over again was "truck (mumble baby talk) truck (blah blah blah) truck"! So I told him "I can't wait to see your new trucks this weekend!" Then Nik got back on the phone and said "He thought you said you wanted to see his new trucks so he just ran off to get them." LOL. I love that kid! Can't wait to see him tomorrow!

Happy Friday everyone!

It's my turn!

Sooo the hubby has gotten his fair share of toys latley... now it's my turn!

My co-worker Erica got this for Christmas and didn't want it or doesn't like it or something. She sold it to me for wayy less than I could've gotten both at the store, fo sho! I LOVE the pink! Yay!

Today is jeans day.
Our tax return was deposited today. However it's $500 more than we were "supposed" to get. Confuseddd?
I'm having a pizza party for lunch!
I worked out this morning, all alone in the gym. Yesss. Plan on it again tomorrow. (that makes 3 days in a row)
Tomorrow is FRIDAY!

Can you tell I'm in a good mood? Heheh.

Happy Hump Day!

This week seems to be going by fairly quickly for me! I'm super excited about that. Tomorrow is THURSDAY already (jeans day!) and my supervisor is buying pizza for me and another co-worker! Yum Yum.

Speaking of food, I thought I'd share our menu for the next couple of weeks, just for fun.

Wednesday (tonight) - Herb pesto chicken with linguine (believe it or not, a Weight Watchers recipe!)
Thursday - Chili wraps (mimick Sonic's chili wraps) - I use turkey chili for mine, Eric uses regular chili. Add a few Fritos (onions if you wish) and wrap it up! Yum!
Friday - Grilled chicken kabobs - marinated chicken with red peppers and onions (the veggies only for Eric!)
Saturday - Eating in Tampa for sister's birthday
Sunday - Pizza
Monday - BBQ Turkey Joe's
Tuesday - Calzone pinwheels
Wednesday - Shepherd's Pie (healthier version with super lean beef and low-fat cheese)
Thursday - Tacos! (one of my FAVES)
Friday - Payday so probably eating out or grilling w/ friends!

I love planning out our meals. It makes shopping easier and Eric always likes looking on the fridge to see "what's for dinner tonight". I can thank my mom for doing this my entire life... now I copy her!

Just a few quick highlights:

- I'm thankful my hubby has been putting away his Xbox stuff when he's done, and not leaving it for me to clean up. ALSO he's been making the bed when he's the last one up in the morning! It may seem little but it's a big deal for me!
- We should be getting our tax money this week, so that means a little extra spending money for me!
- I got paid from a website client yesterday so we can pay off our cruise! Just about 3 months away!
- If you haven't noticed, I started tracking how many miles I'm running in my sidebar. I can't believe I ran over 20 miles in December - especially with the holidays and stuff! I hope to keep it up, and not vary so much (10 miles one month, 20 the next). I want to be more consistent.
- Did anyone else have their facebook messed up on Monday night? It might just have been a few profiles, but for at least an hour Monday night, when I'd go to Facebook.com it would redirect me to Myspace.com!! It was so strange! Then when I'd go to my profile it'd redirect me to some kids Myspace profile!! (probably the culprit) It's hard to believe stuff like that happens. Kids these days. Seeshh.

Happy Wednesday! :)

I still think he's cute. ;)

Off to drag him away now!

Our 3rd Valentines Day together

Happy Valentines Day! We had a good weekend...

Friday I was off early so I went shopping at Target for a few things. That night my friend Callie and I went to base for a "Key Spouse" training. When we got home our husbands were hanging out playing Modern Warfare so we went to our place and watched Couples Retreat. I made Valentines Day cookies earlier that day too.

As you can see I didn't stay within the "lines" when decorating these... haha.

Saturday we slept in and around 2:00 Callie, Heather and I went to the mall to do some shopping, then later all went out for dinner at El Chico's and went to see The Book of Eli (AWESOME movie!)

Sunday we slept in a little bit and I got up to make breakfast around 10:30. (Eric had stayed up till EARLY in the morning playing his newest toy - an Xbox 360)

I made potatoes, pancakes and eggs with mimosa's. I didn't get many pictures, but Eric loved it! After breakfast we opened presents...

I got Eric a Blu-Ray player (he's been wanting one) and he got me some flowers for my office and a Coach wallet! :)

We just relaxed most of the afternoon and headed over to Orlando around 4:30 for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory... MmMMMmmm. The wait was 45 minutes so we had a drink at the bar...

Dinner was yummy and we brought home some Original cheesecake and Eric got a slice of apple cheesecake. MMM. Eric was being a poop-head about taking pictures so these are the only two we got that turned out. Overall it was a good day and a fun weekend.

In other news... we are SET on electronics for a while. Eric informed me earlier this weekend that he sold our Wii to a co-worker and was using the money to buy an Xbox 360. I don't really care because we've had the Wii over a year and have played it all of maybe twice. I never play games anyway on those kinds of things. He also bought a new laptop and I bought him the Blu-Ray player! SEESH!

Soooo, the Xbox thing is getting on my nerves a little bit because it's still new and he has a bunch of friends who play Modern Warfare and so he's staying up all hours of the night and spending lots of time playing it. But... I'm hoping it will wear off! Haha. He assures me he would stop playing if I wanted to spend time with him, and he has, so I think we'll be ok. ;) I'm on the lookout for a game *I* would like to play if I ever got around to it.... and I think I'll be looking for a while. At Best Buy tonight I looked at all of the games and 99% of them involved shooting, punching, or beating people up, and I'm not into that kind of thing! Any suggestions from the experts out there?

*Brrrrr*

So, I truly do feel sorry for all you northerners up there who are getting pounded with snow. Us Floridians are feeling the chill from your winter wonderland all the way down here, and it's C-O-L-D people! This morning when I got up at 6AM to hit the gym I was wishing my steering wheel had a heater in it. Haha. And for the first time in who knows how long, I made myself a cup of hot chocolate! Yummy and warm!

I'm starting to run out of sweaters though! I only have a few because obviously here in Florida I can only wear them one month (give or take a few weeks) out of the year and that's it. I have much more invested in flip-flops and strapless/summery shirts! Ha.

Oh - my sister posted this adorable valentine from my nephew JJ yesterday. How cute is he?!?

Remember a few days ago I posted some dresses I liked? Well I went ahead and ordered this one from Victoria's Secret and got it yesterday!

When I pulled it out and showed Eric he said it looked like a cow. Ugh. No sense of fashion, that guy!! Hehe. (I will most likely be wearing it as a shirt, and NOT a dress)

Tonight Eric and I have a dinner date night at the Pizza Gallery. YUM!

Happy Friday Eve everyone!! I only have a 1/2 day tomorrow then it's the WEEKEND!

Valentines Day planning

For Valentines Day my husband and I have made it our tradition to eat at the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. After having spent our first Vday in Paris, you can't really top that... but we try. :) This year I'm struggling (who am I kidding - it's hard EVERY year!) to find something to buy for Eric. In the past I've gotten him clothes and little things, but I feel like it's SO much easier to buy for girls on Vday! I mean what girl doesn't love flowers, chocolate, little sexy things, and being taken out to dinner?!? Plus, if there is something Eric wants he usually just buys it for himeself, leaving me with not a lot of options! Sigh. I am not the artsy kinda wife who makes up little scrapbooks and stuff. I did do that once, but I took me FOREVER and a half. People think I am so creative, but when it comes to stuff like this... I am not.

This year Vday is on Sunday, so I think I'll go shopping on Saturday and figure something out. I'm also planning on a fabulous breakfast/brunch to make at home, and then we'll head to Orlando for the Cheesecake Factory around 3 or 4 (when it's not super busy) for an early dinner. After that we will probably spend a romantic evening together at home. :)

What are your plans for Valentines Day? Any male gift suggestions? ;)

Weekend recap

I can tell it's Monday because I forgot my computer glasses at home... sigh.

We had a great weekend! As always it went too fast, but was fun while it lasted. I have several friends who don't have jobs and get to stay home all the time... sometimes I'm so jealous of them! But on the other hand, I'd probably go crazy and be super bored if I didn't have something to do. At least I get paid for staying busy and I mostly enjoying what I do. :)

Friday night Eric and I hung around the house, I cleaned, had a few drinks and made chicken quesadillas. We slept in Saturday, then Eric left to volunteer at the Special Olymics event w/ Patrick AFB. He finished early and I was done cleaning the house, so we went out to lunch together and got some groceries for my Mary Kay party and our Superbowl snacks.

Saturday around 4PM all the girls came over (Eric and the guys went out and ate 2lb. hamburgers or something like that) for my party. We had a great time and I got a few MK items.

Amira was all pretty in pink :)

Once the MK party was officially "over" it was someones idea to go out to Coconuts ... and happened to mention there was a tattoo parlor nearby.

So ... guess who got a tattoo this weekend?!??!

Yours truly! Hahahaa. It was my first one, and definitely the only one I ever want to get! I'm such a baby when it comes to pain, and this was PAINFUL! (don't believe the friends who say it feels like a "sting" or something ridiculous like that. The tattoo artist who said it feels like a "burning knife cutting into your skin" was more realistic! LOL)

My original idea was to get Eric's name on my ring finger (I saw it on the Real Housewives of Orange County), but the tattoo artist said that wouldn't work very well and in a few years it would be a blob of ink because of the location and size. So then I wanted one on the underside of my wrist like my friend Sarah has, but Eric didn't like that idea because it would be too visible. After those two ideas were shot down, I wasn't going to get one because I couldn't figure out where I'd want it. My friends Tiffani and Callie each got one on their foot, so I finally decided to do that as well. I really love it!!

I was calm at this point because he hadn't started drilling into my skin yet ...

...but not for long! I was gritting my teeth!

It was over in 20 minutes though, and hasn't really hurt since!

Here's Tiffani getting some feathers on her foot:

And Callie got her husband's name too:

(Jenna - the other girl in these pics- got the Gemini symbol on her hip too, but I don't have any pics.)

Soooo it was a fun fun weekend! I'm tired though! Haha. I'm looking forward to this weeknd being Valentines Day and not having a lot of crazy plans. :) Hopefully just relaxing together and  reminicing back three years ago when we met in Paris. <3 Ahh.
